Melissa Spearing, 1984-2024
We were very saddened to receive news of the sudden passing Melissa Spearing on Aug 19. 2024. Melissa was a force majeure in Canada’s tree seed community. She worked for the Forest Gene Conservation Association in Ontario before joining the National Tree Seed Centre in New Brunswick a few years ago. She also served as a director for the Canadian Forest Genetics Association and its Tree Seed Working Group, with which she helped organize two workshops in BC in 2022 and 2023.
Melissa’s contributions, interests and connections were extensive. Her love and enthusiasm touched the lives of many people across the country and abroad. We miss you Missy! Read her obituary here.
CFGA/ACFG’s roots go back to the First Meeting of Tree Breeding and Propagation held in Ottawa in 1937. The mandate and membership of CFGA/ACFG has subsequently expanded to include all forest genetics activities, including tree improvement seed management and conservation.
